WIPO ccTLD Conference

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a conference this week in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the intellectual property issues and concerns of country-code top-level domain administrators and the IP community as a whole. Representatives from international governments, ICANN, ccTLD administrators and intellectual property experts were among the participants. Topics on the agenda included Best Practise proposals, the UDRP and Alternative Dispute Resolution Policies for ccTLD administrators.

Domain Names Scammer Faces Restraining Order

A Toronto-based organisation known variously as Electronic Domain Name Monitoring, Corporate Domain Name Monitoring and the National Domain Name Registry faces a court restraining order for scaring users into registering domain names for little reason. The company allegedly faxed registrants of domain names warning them that someone else had attempted to cybersquat them. They registered the .net address of the targeted .com address and communicated that a $70 fee would rectify the situation. The Federal Trade Commission has discovered that some 27,000 users have been conned into parting with this fee, netting the company some $1.7m! The issue will go to court later this month.
