Australian tipped as next ICANN President

It has been reported this week that Paul Twomey, a former Australian government official, is the top pick to become the next president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Although no deal has been reached, ICANN's board has apparently given an internal search committee the green light to negotiate an employment contract with Twomey.

If he takes the job, the 41-year-old Sydney resident would succeed Stuart Lynn to become the third person to lead ICANN in its five-year history. He will also be the first non-U.S. citizen to head up ICANN.

Nominet call for comment on .me.uk domains

UK domain name registry, Nominet is reviewing the operation of the .me.uk second level domain which was launched in January last year. As part of the process, the organisation is asking for people to provide feedback over the contentious issue of who owns the rights to a name.

Afghanistan re-opens .af domain

On Monday this week, the government of Afghanistan officially regained legal and technical control of the .af country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD).

The .af domain was first registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority in October 1997 by a private Afghan citizen named Abdul Razeeq. However, Razeeq later disappeared and some services were halted to the .af domain. The Internet was then banned under the Taliban regime and the .af domain has been inaccessible ever since.

The re-opening of the .af domain has been set up and supported under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The new domain is now reserved exclusively for private and official e-mail or website use by Afghanistan residents.

.geek.nz proposal moves to the next stage

The straw poll for the creation of the new second level domain '.geek.nz' was overwhelmingly in favour of its creation. Over 1,000 votes were cast with the result being:

  • 956 FOR
  • 103 AGAINST
  • 6 ABSTAIN

The result of the straw vote means that the application to create '.geek.nz' can proceed to the submission stage.
