25% of FTSE 100 companies now use NetNames Platinum Service

NetNames this week reached a major milestone, with 25 of the FTSE 100 companies now signed up to use Platinum Service for their corporate domain name management requirements. The FTSE 100 is the key index which includes the 100 largest UK companies measured by market capitalisation.

Geoff Wicks, CEO of NetBenefit, commented: “The business issue of proactively protecting online assets is a key one for large corporates, so it is very encouraging that this message is getting through to the UK’s leading companies.  We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of FTSE companies who have chosen to protect themselves with Platinum Service over the past 12 months.  However, there is clearly more work to do in educating the market on how best to prevent online brand infringement and cybersquatting.”

British Airways, Reckitt Benckiser, Centrica, Aviva and Hilton Group are some of the 25 FTSE companies who have acted to secure and protect the domain names they hold.

Washington Post misses annual domain name renewal

It has been reported in the press today that the Washington Post Co., neglected to reply to the renewal notice for their corporate domain name washpost.com and allowed the name to lapse. This caused the company’s internal email system to crash on Thursday afternoon and resulted in severe disruptions for staff. In this case, Washington Post were able to re-register the domain name before it was snapped up by someone else and their email service has now returned to normal.

The Washington Post is not the first high profile company to make this mistake. There have been other well covered examples of companies who have fallen in to the same trap, including Microsoft who allowed their hotmail domain name to lapse back in 1999.

This most recent example is further evidence of the risks that exist if a company fails to effectively manage their domain name portfolio. NetNames Platinum Service is designed to completely remove this risk by providing certainty of domain name renewal and removing the need to reply to individual renewal notices.
