ICANN's role discussed at UN forum
About 200 diplomats, activists and representatives
of companies like Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems have this
week met at the United Nations Global Forum on Internet Governance
in New York to share ideas on how the Internet should be governed.
UN secretary general Kofi Annan made a speech criticising the way
Internet standards are set and the domain name system is handled.
Annan noted that the current process is dominated by organizations
in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. He claims the current
situation must be rectified in order to ensure that the system is
accessible and responsive to all countries.
Paul Twomey, the chief executive of the Internet Corporation of
Assigned Names and Numbers, said the organization is already trying
to modernize and allow participation from other countries.
The Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
was established in 1998. Its authority, which is granted by the
U.S. Government, formally covers the Internet addressing system
(DNS) but extends to related trademark disputes and security of
the Internet's core directories. ICANN chooses the organizations
and companies that operate the registries for the various domain
name suffixes such as .com and .org
