Nominet wins case against Domain Registrar Services (DRS)

UK domain name Registry Nominet has won its court case against Domain Registrar Services Ltd. (DRS). Last year Nominet took action against DRS and its sister company UK Names, after receiving complaints that DRS were cold calling potential domain name customers and claiming to be in partnership with Nominet.

The Directors of DRS, Scott Denny and Matthew Hayes, have now given an undertaking that they will not in future engage in the domain name business in the UK. They have also paid £40,000 towards Nominet's costs and agreed to supply a list of people they have approached.

GNR announce launch date for second level .name registrations

Global Name Registry (GNR), the operator of the .name generic top level domain (gTLD), has announced that its standard second level domain name registrations will become available from 11:30AM EST on 14 January 2004. This will allow people to register domains directly under the .name suffix (e.g. smith.name)

Currently GNR only offers personal domain name registrations at the 3rd level, which are separated by two dots (e.g. john.smith.name). It also offers personal email addresses (e.g. john@smith.name).
