General domain name news

  • The .org registry plans to launch German-script Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) registrations on 15th January 2005.
  • The .mp sunrise period has been extended until 30th November 2004. From 1st December, .mp domains will be available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Orders for .mp can be placed now at www.netnames.com.



.pw domain being launched 15th December

The Palau country-code Top Level Domain .pw is being launched on 15th December, as a 'Communities of shared interests' domain. NetNames customers wishing to block registrations of their trademark should contact their Account Managers now.



ICANN news

Three year Strategic Plan available for public comment

ICANN is inviting public comment on its three year Strategic Plan, until 15th January 2005. Some of the issues covered in the Plan are funding, allocation of resources and policy development through a "bottom-up consensus process". ICANN has indicated that it will operate as a private entity after its agreement with the United States Department of Commerce expires in 2006.

Date of next IDN workshop announced

ICANN will hold an IDN workshop in Cape Town, South Africa, on 1st December 2004. The workshop will be open to the public and will also be web-cast. This workshop will build on the achievements of the last one held in Kuala Lumpur. The public is invited to submit questions for debate to the IDN Discuss Forum - see http://www.icann.org/topics/idn.html for details.

ICANN hopes to move VeriSign lawsuit to arbitration

ICANN has begun proceedings to move its contractual dispute with VeriSign to arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. By doing so, ICANN hopes to resolve the long-running dispute over VeriSign's right to use its monopoly of control over the .com and .net core databases to offer extra services such as Site Finder.
