Ronaldinho wins domain dispute

Footballer Ronaldinho, who plays for Brazil and Barcelona, has been awarded ronaldinhogaucho.com in a dispute arbitrated by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Even though his real name is actually Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, the "Ronaldinho Gaucho" professional name was trademarked by the footballer's agent back in 2000 and is the name that applies to several sponsorship deals. The original registrant of the domain failed to respond to Ronaldinho's complaint.

Afilias to provide registry services for .in

Afilias India Pvt. Ltd, a subsidiary of the .info registry Afilias Limited, has signed an agreement with the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) to provide registry services for the Indian country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), .in. Afilias will be responsible for the registration system, Whois service and DNS. Afilias will also advise on policy, marketing and other relevant matters.

Microsoft lose out on mocosoft.com

WIPO has decided that Microsoft is not entitled to a Spanish software company's domain name, mocosoft.com. The panel decided that "moco" is not phonetically close enough to "micro" to use the precedent set by past rulings (in Microsoft's favour) over domains such as microsof.com and mikerosoft.net.

Chinese Internationalised Domain Names coming soon

The launch of .cn Internationalised Domain Names (IDN) is set for 17th January 2005. More information will follow in the new year.

Happy holidays to everyone
