AuDA policy review now over

The Australian Domain Administration (auDA) Policy Advisory Panel has now completed a review of the Australian domain registration policy and has also made a number of recommendations that will simplify the overall .au registration process. The recommendations include allowing multiple domain registrations per applicant, trademarks as eligible registration criteria, connection between domain name and the registrant name and creation of a 'reserved list' for domain names that may not be registered. The Panel also discussed the possibility of releasing two new second-level domains in order to further benefit the Australian Internet community.

The auDA Board will consider the Panel's report next month and implementation of the Panel's recommendations will take place later this year.

2. Industry Update

WIPO Meeting

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is planning to carry out regional consultations on the possibilities of expanding intellectual property rules on domain names. WIPO will hold the first meeting in Brussels, Belgium on April 23, 2001, followed by further meetings in Ghana, Argentina, Australia, Spain and the USA.

US government funds domain name study

The US government is funding a study to examine the impact of new technologies and policies on the DNS (domain name system) as part of a long-term effort to ensure that searching on the Internet remains feasible and that the actual service improves. Research will look at many concerns regarding the technical infrastructure of the Internet, particularly its scalability as the number of sites and users grows. The study will also look at emerging technologies that effect Internet searching as well as objectively looking at the number of TLDs that can be added without adversely affecting the technical operations of the Internet.

TLD association formed

The world's first industry association for the holders of Top Level Domains (TLDs) has been formed in the United States, creating a single voice for the concerns of the growing, multimillion dollar TLD industry. The aim of the not-for-profit organisation is to represent member TLD holders as a whole to business, industry, government and the media and to promote e-commerce through the growth of the worldwide TLD industry and its related business. For further information, please visit www.tlda.org.

Commerce department re-delegates .edu domain

The Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has announced that it will hand over the .edu restricted TLD to Educause, without resorting to public consultation. Educause is likely to open up the .edu TLD to US community colleges and other groups that have currently found it difficult to obtain .edu registrations.

3. Fact of the Week

Research out this week from analyst IDC has given people working in e-commerce something to smile about before the Easter break, with its proclamation that the outlook for e-commerce is 'rosy'. IDC predicts that spending on internet-related projects will pick up from the middle of the year as companies restart projects that had been put on ice last year.
