Domain name news

.pk (Pakistan) to be launched soon

We should know the final details regarding the launch of .pk at the second level later on this month. It is thought that a sunrise period for trademark owners will be launched at some point in the next two months, followed by unrestricted availability.

.es (Spain) relaxation of registration requirements

The Spanish Registry recently announced that it is planning to relax the rules for registration of .es this year. It is thought that a first sunrise period (for government agencies) will launch in May, with a second for trademark holders following later in the summer and first-come, first-served availability following that.

More information on both these items to be released as soon as we have it.

ICANN news

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced its approval of two new sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs), .jobs and .travel. .jobs is intended to serve the needs of the international human resource management community and will be restricted appropriately. .travel will be restricted to operations within the travel industry, including airlines, theme parks and car rental companies. It is thought that both sTLDs will be operational towards the end of the year.

AfriNIC, Africa's own Regional Internet number Registry (RIR), has just received its first allocation of numbering resources, including IP addresses and Autonomous System Numbers for the Africa region.

Telcordia, the company charged with assessing the five applicants for management of the .net domain, announced its findings at the end of last month and placed VeriSign (the current operator) in the lead. A final decision has yet to be made. A public forum at ICANN's site is ongoing.
