Total number of domain name registrations reaches 82.9 million
VeriSign's recently published quarterly Domain Name Brief
indicated that the total number of domain name registrations reached
82.9 million at the end of the second quarter of 2005. This
represents an eight percent growth since the first quarter of 2005
and a 28 percent increase since the second quarter of 2004.
Renewal rates for .com and .net were at 75 percent during the
second quarter of 2005, remaining close to the highest on record,
and signalling continuing strength in the domain name market.
Additionally, a recent study by VeriSign found that 75 percent of
domain names are registered by businesses and 22 percent by
individuals, with three percent unaccounted for.

.pk (Pakistan) sunrise queue 1 deadline 31st
August
In order to secure a place in sunrise queue 1 for second-level .pk
domains, applications must be submitted to the registry by 31st
August. Applications submitted to the registry after this date will
be entered into sunrise queue 2, which will not be processed by the
registry until after 30th September. Open registration for .pk is
expected to begin 1st November.
Trademark holders should go to www.netnames.com
in order to make a sunrise application for .pk.
.cn (China) overtakes .jp (Japan) in numbers of
registrations
Figures recently released by the China Internet Network
Information Center (CNNIC) show that by the end of July 2005, the
number of .cn registrations had risen to 720,000, compared to
630,000 registrations of .jp. This makes .cn the domain name with
the highest number of registrations in Asia.
