.jobs update

It is expected that .jobs domains which were successfully applied for during the 'startup' period will go live towards the beginning of October. Customers are recommended to advise NetNames of any required redelegations as soon as possible, so that domains can be operational with the minimum of delay.

.jobs is now first-come, first-served. Orders for .jobs can be placed at www.gtld.com.

Further delays for .xxx

The arrival of the .xxx Top Level Domain (TLD) was further delayed after a recent meeting of the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Staff were informed by ICANN's board of directors that ICM Registry, the organisation charged with regulating the provision of the new TLD which is intended to signify adult content, would have to agree to further contractual stipulations before it is given the go-ahead.

.cat (Catalan) given initial approval

ICANN recently gave its approval to sponsored TLD .cat, intended to represent the Catalan language and culture. Originating from the Spanish region of Catalonia, the Catalan language is used by as many as 12 million people in parts of Spain, France, Andorra and Italy.

.cl (Chile) IDNs

Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) are now available for the Chilean suffix .cl, using the characters á é í ó ú ü ñ. The same registration requirements apply as with non-IDN .cl domains. For more info and to register, go to www.netnames.com.

High value domain name sales

The Domain Name Journal recently reported five consecutive weeks of private domain name sales with at least one selling for a six-figure sum (in US dollars, at least). The sale of vip.com recently netted $600,000 (~£340,000) in cash and another $800,000 (~£454,000) in stock. Lofts.com sold for $100,000 (~£56,500) the week before.

TLDs other than .com are also pulling in fairly large sums. Webdesign.co.uk recently sold for £25,760.

Such figures serve to reinforce the view that the perceived value of domain names is rising, not only as intellectual property, but also in their own right as commodities.

.nz (New Zealand) registrations reach 200K

The New Zealand registry recently announced that registrations of .nz had reached the 200,000 mark. .nz was entered into the root in 1987 and in March of '94 registrations stood at just 272.
