An opportunity
for a bit of Christmas in the New Year!
The domain
name registry for the Christmas Islands now has a country-code
shared-registry system (CCSRS), which only allows registrations
through an accredited registrar. However the very first registrar,
CITC, is now up and running and will start accepting applications
for .cx domain names from January 8, 2001. The registrar expects
that the .cx ccTLD will become very popular as it will be available
to anyone, unlike the sub-domains that currently exist such as
com.cx, net.cx and org.cx which require a local presence within
the Christmas Islands.

Update ...
Nissan
Motor Co Ltd goes to court to rescue nissan.com
Uzi Nissan,
a North Carolina based software developer, has been operating
his small business through nissan.com since 1994. In 1999 the
Nissan Motor Co Ltd decided that it wanted this domain name to
promote its automobile business and rather than attempt settlement
through ICANN's Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), despite
it's many successful disputes being resolved, attempted to fight
through the courts.
Nissan Motor
Co Ltd have recently appealed against the preliminary injunction
which stated that Uzi Nissan could keep nissan.com live, by ensuring
he displayed a disclaimer that his site was not associated with
the car manufacturer and that he did not allow automobile advertising
on his site. They claim that thousands of visitors to nissan.com
are misled and are not looking for Nissan Computer or Uzi Nissan
and that Uzi Nissan generates revenue by diverting these visitors
to numerous advertisers, who pay per click through. The case continues.
ICANN delay
launch
The Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has rolled
back its target date for contract completion with the new registry
operators according to Newsbytes. The ICANN President, Mike Roberts,
said this week, "We're close, but that doesn't mean we are ready
to announce anything yet, in mid to late January we will announce
that we have completed contracts". It is likely that the new domain
suffixes will be made available to all in the summer period. At
present Roberts will not put a date on when the new registries
will come online.

News ...
NetNames market
surveillance team has reported increasing demand for information
relating to the new domain name suffixes.
The company
has now set-up a new suffix news and information portal at http://www.gtld.co.uk
and http://www.gtld.com
to allow enquirers to keep up to date on when the new top-level
domains will become available and how to apply.
The new domains
will enable greater ease of navigation on the web and put an end
to the artificial shortage of domain names.

Tip
of the Week ..
When registering
your product, service or brand as a domain name think about the
different types of typographical errors. As well as missing repeat
letters in the middle of a domain name, the latest research shows
that a common typo mistake is to miss the dot following the "www"
in the Internet browser address line. Register wwwyourname.com
and its variants (note the missing dot) and you will help to ensure
that your visitors reach you every time, and will also combat
the threat of cybersquatters and typosquatters.
