New
agenda for next ICANN meeting
Following
the events of September 11th, ICANN has announced that it
intends to amend the agenda for its next meeting in Marina
Del Rey, California, from November 13 - 15.
The
ICANN meetings will now focus on stability and security
of the Internet's naming and addressing systems and of their
operational implementation globally. According to ICANN,
the events of September 11th offered a tragic reminder of
the incalculable importance of a reliable and secure naming
and addressing system to support emergency response, personal
and other communications and information sharing.
ICANN
says it will be seeking to promote discussion throughout
the community on how to reassess areas of potential threats
that could affect services within the scope of ICANN's responsibilities,
how to improve readiness to meet these threats, and what
additional policies or other actions should be considered
and implemented to facilitate improvements.
ICANN
has stated that the new focus of the meetings may well delay
progress on some other important initiatives that are currently
underway.
Disaster
domains delisted
Verisign
last week halted auctions of some domain names related to
the September 11th terrorist atrocities, in an effort to
remove offensive sites. Names such as 09112001.com and worldtradecenterdisaster.com
have been registered, and whilst many of the sites have
been set up to commemorate the victims of the tragedy, offensive
sites have been delisted. The situation is being continuously
monitored.

New
domain dispute proposed for .ca
The
Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), which oversees
Canada's .ca ccTLD, has announced that it is seeking input
on a new dispute resolution policy. It expects to have implemented
it by the end of the year, with significant differences
from ICANN's Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). This
will include a broader definition of the legitimate use
of domain names and a penalty of up to $5000 for filing
bogus complaints against legitimate domain names.
.bw
domains now available
It is
now possible to register Botswana .co.bw domain names. .co.bw
domain names are high risk (i.e. no restriction on registrations),
although .org.bw may be registered by no profit making organisations
only. Names must be of three or more characters.
