TLD News ..

New Top Seven Open Forum

EC-POP, the EC Panel of Participants in Internet Management and Organization held a public hearing yesterday in Brussels. The hearing offered the opportunity for promotion and discussion of the new top-level domains, which will be available later this year. During the morning session, each operator of a "chartered" domain, .aero, .coop, .museum and .pro, was given a 45-minute time-slot with which to openly discuss plans for their chosen TLD. This was followed by discussions regarding the three "open" TLDs, namely .biz, .info and .name, as well as a full hour slot for a representative from the European Commission to answer questions regarding the status of .eu. Approximately 200 people were expected to attend the hearing. More to follow…

Industry Facts ...

There are a continuing number of interesting facts flying around which highlight various domain registration trends around the globe. We thought we would share a couple with you…

- A survey conducted by domain registrar, Network Solutions Inc., has revealed that the UK has registered more domain names than any other country outside of the US, followed by Canada and Korea.

- Afternic reported this week that the number of domain names registered within the Chilean top-level domain, .cl rose more than 200% last year.

INDUSTRY UPDATE…

The first Asian-script Cybersquatting Claim

A Japanese company has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organisation against an alleged cybersquatter. The case is the first Asian-script domain name dispute and many more are expected. Following the vast amounts of money exchanged for some English-language domain names, some speculators have expected to command similar profitable mark-ups since the introduction of Asian character domain names, introduced late last year.

Hollywoodnetwork, Inc. v. Video Citizen Network, FA

Hollywood Network Inc. has recently won back the domain name hollywoodnetwork.tv from Video Citizen Network thanks to the National Arbitration Forum. The judging Panel decided that the domain name is confusingly similar to the business name and service mark as the Complainants entire mark is in the domain name.

"3G" land grab

A recently set-up company, telecomnames.com, a subsidiary of UK-based Newworld Technology claims to have built a portfolio of over 800 "3G" and "Telecom" related domain names. The third generation (3G) mobile license auctions of last summer looks to have provoked another land grab for Internet addresses with either '3G' or 'third generation' in the domain name. Prices start from £1000 with the more popular names on the market for £0.5M!

Will they sell? Well there was a lot of hype for the licenses themselves, which proved massively expensive and some speculators fear that 3G will simply not live up to expectations, with small chances of immediate profit due to such large initial expenditure.

Tip of the Week ..

When registering your company domain names, why not chose to register generic names also, which may relate to your product or service offering. For example, a vineyard may chose to register not only their company and brand names, but also grape.fr, tasty-wine.es or even vine.tv*. This will help to ensure that, upon submission, your search engine placement is improved. The final result? More interested visitors to your website.

*for some country-code top-level domains (cctld's) registration restrictions do apply, please ask your domain name registrar for further details or visit http://www.netnames.com
