The countryless
domain
Even though
ICANN delegated the .ps country-code to the Occupied Palestinian
Territories almost a year ago, unrest in the Middle East has unfortunately
delayed the implementation of a Palestinian domain registry. However,
the dot-ps administrator is hoping that the top-level domain will
be up and running within the next month. It is expected that initial
registrations will only be available to Palestinian entities for
the first few months. After that the restrictions will hopefully
be removed and anyone will be able to register a dot-ps, regardless
of their location.
Dot-cx
operational delay
After
reporting a few weeks ago that CITC, the first accredited registrar
for the Christmas Island top-level domain, was about to become
operational, we can now confirm that .cx and per.cx (for individuals)
are now available.

Update…
ICANN Meeting
ICANN (The
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) – the organisation
that administers the domain name system, has issued an open invitation
to ‘any interested person’ to its next round of meetings. The
meetings, which take place from March 10-13, will be held in Melbourne,
Australia. If you’re interested in attending, please visit www.icannmelb.maddocks.com.au

U.S. House
panel to hold new hearing on domains
The House
Commerce Committee has announced that it will hold a hearing next
month on the process used by the Internet’s governing body to
come up with a new generation of web site addresses. ICANN, set
up by the U.S. Government in 1998 to oversee the Internet’s domain
name system has recently come under fire and the Committee wants
to ensure that the process of choosing new domain suffixes is
fair and successfully sparks competition.
QVC gets
tough on domains
U.S. home
shopping channel, QVC, this week tried getting tough on an individual
it believed to be cybersquattering, who registered a domain name
supposedly belonging to the company. The company sent out a letter
via their lawyer to an individual who owns the www.n7qvc.com domain.
Whilst the domain includes the words ‘QVC’, the company didn’t
realise that the name is registered to a Tony Peterson, a keen
radio ham whose call sign is n7qvc. As soon as QVC realised this,
it retracted its threat of legal action, realising that any arbitration
process would most likely rule in Tony’s favour.
Sex.com
up for grabs – if you’ve $85 million spare
German Internet
platform, domshop.de is auctioning off the sex.com domain for
an incredible $85 million – a new record. Up until now, the most
expensive domain sold was business.com, which went for a ‘meagre’
$7.5 million. As yet, despite massive interest in the name, none
of the submitted bids have been high enough. American Stanford
University graduate, Gary Kremen, is set to be a multi-millionaire
when the sale finally takes place.
